Common Questions About Mystery Shopping
Yes! Shoppers’ View is always looking for dedicated mystery shoppers all around the United States and Canada. If you have a sharp eye for detail, a passion for helping local businesses succeed, and a love for shopping, you can sign up as a mystery shopper here.
As a mystery shopper, you will visit various businesses and conduct yourself as a typical customer. You’ll order meals, shop for clothing, etc., as you typically would when shopping—but our client will rely on you to be particularly observant as you do so. After your visit, you’ll provide detailed information on your experiences, with a particular focus on the level of service you received from staff and the quality of products. The fact that you are working as a mystery shopper must remain completely confidential.
No specific experience is required in order to sign up as a mystery shopper. However, certain personal qualities—a talent for observation, strong communication skills, and the ability to meet deadlines—are necessary. Though it’s not required, prior experience in the retail, financial services, hospitality, leasing, or customer service industries will be helpful to you in your role as a mystery shopper.
No, there is no cost to sign up.
The demand for mystery shopper services in any specific area changes on a regular basis. Once you’re accepted as a mystery shopper, you’ll be able to view shopping programs that are currently available in your area. If no mystery shops are listed as available in your area, it may be that all available shops have been accepted by other shoppers in your area, or there may simply not be any shops available at the moment. We add new clients on a regular basis, so you’ll want to check the listings frequently to see when new shopping assignments become available.
You’ll be notified by email if an assignment becomes available in your area that fits your experience and profile. Shoppers’ View also maintains an online job board.
No. When you sign up to become a mystery shopper, you are not applying to be an employee of Shoppers’ View. You are an independent contractor with the option to accept or reject individual shopping assignments on a case-by-case basis.
That depends on you and your schedule. As an independent contractor, you have the right to accept or reject any assignment you are offered. Generally speaking, mystery shopping is considered a part-time activity, with most shoppers working about 20 hours a month.
Each shopping assignment has a different payment arrangement. The normal range of payment is $10 – $40, although some assignments pay significantly more. In the case of certain mystery shopper assignments, such as restaurant shops, the payment may be in the form of reimbursement for the cost of your meal and the meal of a guest. The payment for each assignment is clearly explained before you agree to accept it.
Shops are paid via PayPal. Shops submitted between the 1st and 15th will be paid around the last day of that month. Shops submitted between the 16th and 31st will be paid around the 15th of the following month.
The amount of money you earn as a mystery shopper depends on the number and type of shops you are willing to perform. Working part-time, many mystery shoppers earn $200-$300 per week; however, a dedicated, full-time mystery shopper can earn $20,000 or more a year.
Absolutely not! Our mystery shopper services depend on shoppers who genuinely enjoy the experience and who feel comfortable and confident during the mystery shop. As an independent contractor, you are not obligated to accept any assignment you’re not interested in.
In most cases, an individual mystery shop will take no longer than 30 minutes to complete. However, you may be asked to complete several consecutive shops in one day.
Yes, you’ll be given a specific deadline for each assignment.
